Commissioning

I am happy to work from and with any sketches, drawings or images you may have that indicate the style of the piece of furniture to be commissioned (please feel free to e-mail them to me, using the address at the bottom of this page). I am also prepared to try and work within your budget, wherever practical.

Although I specialise in using locally-grown hardwoods, I’m also open to using timbers imported from Europe and North America, as well as sheet materials (such as veneered MDF) which can help to reduce material costs (English vs. American walnut being a prime example!).

We can arrange a meeting to discuss the design and ideas further. I won’t usually ask for a fee at this point, assuming you intend to go ahead with the commission. In some situations, I may ask for a fee to cover the cost of travel (no more than £50), if you are outside of the Bristol area.

After the meeting or point of contact, I will send you a written confirmation of the design, specification, drawings, price and an estimated delivery date. I can also provide a simple CAD drawing or sketch at no extra cost. At this point, I would require a 25% deposit in order to proceed further with the commission. This allows me to purchase the necessary materials and also underlines your commitment to the project. Any fees payed prior to the deposit (travel, design) will be deducted from the total cost.

From then on, you can choose to either pay the outstanding 75% as a lump sump at the end of the project or, I am happy to accept staged payments throughout the build process. Either way, I will require to have received full payment before I can deliver your item.

After purchasing the materials, I like to leave the timber to settle and ‘acclimatise’ for one-month before further machining. This allows the timber to reach an equilibrium moisture content within itself, in preparation for a life in a modern home with central-heating, which greatly reduces the chances of the timber splitting, warping of cracking once it’s in your home! From the on, I aim to complete most pieces within the allocated deadline. Lead time from the date of order (point of paying the deposit) averages between eight to twelve weeks, or two-to-three months.

You may find prices on the Portfolio to be useful in providing you with a rough guide. However, both the material choice and methods of construction can have an effect on the overall costs of any item of furniture.

Please feel free to contact me with any enquiries. I’m not always available to talk on the phone and the signal in my area could be better. If you’re unable to get hold of me, please, feel free to e-mail me your enquiry (please use the link below or fill in the form on the Contact page). I aim to respond to all forms of contact within twenty-four hours.
